SHIPPENSBURG - East Stroudsburg University closed its first weekend of PSAC East softball action with a pair of losses (7-1, 6-2) at Shippensburg on Sunday.
The Raiders (21-11) remain perfect with a 4-0 conference record, while the Warriors fall to 0-4 following two tough road trips to perennial contenders Bloomsburg and Shippensburg.
In the opener, ESU trailed 1-0 through 3 1/2 innings before Shippensburg put up six runs, all with two outs, in the fourth. The Warriors scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman DH Sam Bastian that brought home junior C Amanda Feist in the fifth inning.
Dani Shields threw a complete game for the Raiders and Sarah Stengl and Hope Cornell both had two-run singles in the fourth inning.
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in the second game on a two RBI single by senior 3B Candice Pastor that scored Bastian and freshman 2B Brittany Racek.
Shippensburg scored an unearned run in the fourth but left the bases loaded against sophomore Jackie Battaglino as ESU maintained a 2-1 lead.
The Raiders went ahead with five runs their next time up, as the first three batters reached base before junior Jen Bensinger replaced Battaglino in the circle. All three runners eventually scored and an error led to two more unearned runs as Shippensburg seized a 6-2 advantage.
Lori Knopf tossed a three-hitter and didn't allow an earned run to earn the victory.
ESU travels to Kutztown for PSAC East action on Wednesday before hosting West Chester in the home opener next Friday at 2:30 p.m.
