EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior Kristen Halvorsen threw a 2-0, one-hit shutout in the first game and the offense exploded for six runs in the first inning of an 11-2 (5 inn.) win in game two as East Stroudsburg University swept a PSAC East softball doubleheader from West Chester on Friday at Zimbar Field.
Halvorsen earned the victory in both games and moved into a tie for second on ESU's career wins list with 38, as she surrendered just two runs and four hits over 11 innings of work in the circle.
Halvorsen retired 15 straight batters after a leadoff single in the second inning in the first game, and the Warriors scored both of their runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single by senior SS Laura Snyder.
Senior 1B Ali Hale led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior 3B Candice Pastor. Sophomore OF Kara Darcey singled and moved to second on the throw, and Snyder broke the scoreless tie with a base hit to put ESU ahead 2-0.
Halvorsen didn't allow another base runner until Tara Colantuono reached on an error to lead off the seventh inning, but retired the next three hitters to seal her 13th career shutout, tied for third in school history.
ESU (14-25, 8-10) put the second game away early, scoring six runs in the first and three in the second, and added two more in the third to lead 11-0. West Chester (27-16, 6-10) scored both of its runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman 2B Brittany Racek doubled to start the bottom of the first, and four other Warriors had hits in the frame, including two-run singles by Snyder and senior OF Missy McAloon.
Junior C Amanda Feist and senior DH Eliza Morosco both had two-run triples to highlight the rest of ESU's scoring.
Racek (2-3, 2 runs), freshman OF Jamie Mingis (3-3, 3 runs) and Morosco (2-3, 1 run, 2 RBI) combined to go 7-for-9 at the top of the order, and ESU pounded out 15 hits to set a season-high. Snyder and McAloon also had two-hit games for the Warriors.
Halvorsen threw three shutout innings to start the game before giving up two runs in the fourth. Junior Jen Bensinger pitched a scoreless fifth inning to end the game.
Halvorsen moved into second in ESU's record book with her 92nd career start, a mark that she can set with two starts on Saturday in a doubleheader vs. Kutztown at 1 p.m. at Zimbar Field.
