EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior Kristen Halvorsen threw a pair of complete games, including her 14th career shutout, and East Stroudsburg University stayed alive in the race for the final playoff spot in the PSAC East by torching Mansfield pitching for 18 runs (10-1, 8-0) in a doubleheader sweep on Friday at Zimbar Field.
ESU jumped on the Mounties for 10 runs in the first three innings of the opener and ended the game after five frames. Senior 1B Ali Hale broke the second game open with a grand slam in the third inning and the Warriors scored two in the sixth to close the game and complete the season sweep.
The Warriors finish their conference schedule with an 11-13 record and move into third place in the PSAC East following Friday's action. West Chester (10-12) hosts East leader Kutztown (19-3) on Saturday, and Shippensburg (9-13) travels to Mansfield (6-16).
Two losses by West Chester and one by Shippensburg would put ESU in the PSAC tournament for the second straight season after a 26-year absence. ESU holds the tiebreaker over West Chester with a 3-1 record this season, but went 0-4 against Shippensburg should the Raiders and Warriors finish with identical 11-13 records.
Halvorsen's two victories give her 41 in her career at ESU. She received plenty of offensive support in both games, starting with three runs in the first inning of game one sparked by a triple by junior C Amanda Feist.
The Warriors scored five more runs in the second. Freshman LF Jamie Mingis and senior 3B Candice Pastor both had two-run hits and Hale had an RBI single as the Warriors pounded six of their 11 hits in the inning. Senior CF Missy McAloon contributed an RBI single as ESU took a 10-0 lead after three innings.
Freshman 2B Brittany Racek started game two with a single and scored in the first inning, and Hale's grand slam put the Warriors ahead 5-0 in the third. McAloon singled and stole second to lead off the frame, Mingis was hit by a pitch and Feist singled to load the bases, and Hale drove the ball over the right field fence for her fifth career home run at ESU.
Mansfield threatened to score in the fourth but Mingis and senior SS Laura Snyder combined on the relay to cut down a runner at the plate for the third out of the inning.
McAloon gave ESU a 6-0 advantage as she stole home in the bottom of the fourth, and the Warriors scored twice in the sixth to end the game early. McAloon had her third single and third stolen base of the game and scored on an error, and Feist laid down a bunt for a base hit that scored sophomore 2B Briana Malachowski for the final run of the game.
McAloon was 4-for-5 with four stolen bases and three runs in the doubleheader and Hale went 4-for-6 with five RBI to lead the Warriors seniors, who were honored between games. Halvorsen, Michelle Meyers, Eliza Morosco, Pastor and Snyder also played their final home games at ESU.
