Warriors Lacrosse Heads to West Chester for PSAC Semifinals

4/28/2008 12:00:00 AM

EAST STROUDSBURG - Seniors Katie Fretz and Renee Maniscalco, two of the top goal scorers in school history, and Janelle Cronmiller, the NCAA Division II leader in ground balls, lead East Stroudsburg University into the 2008 PSAC lacrosse semifinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at West Chester.

The seniors have led the Warriors to an 11-6 record this season to tie the school record for wins after going 3-12 and 2-12 over the previous two seasons. They last qualified for the PSAC tournament in 2005 when the current seniors were freshmen.

West Chester, the defending PSAC champion, is the top seed and is joined in the field by No. 2 Lock Haven and No. 3 Bloomsburg. The championship game will be held on Saturday at the highest remaining seed.

Fretz and Maniscalco have been ESU's top scorers throughout their careers and both scored their 100th career goal this season.

Fretz leads the team with 36 goals and has seven assists. She has 117 career goals, eighth in school history, and has led the Warriors in goals in each of the last three seasons.

Maniscalco is a three-time member of the All-PSAC team and has team-highs in points (48) and assists (16) while also scoring 32 goals this year. She has 49 career assists, fifth all-time, and 109 goals during her four years as a Warrior.

Cronmiller was an All-PSAC second team selection last year and leads the nation with 4.8 ground balls per game and ranks in the top five in caused turnovers. She has led a defense that ranks third in the PSAC in goals against average and has allowed six fewer goals per game than last season.

Junior Kirstin Mayberry has started all 17 games in goal and has 170 saves and a .483 save percentage. Senior Jess Brown and freshman Brittany Bissell have started on defense for the Warriors.

Christine Bradley and Molly O'Hara have played key roles in the ESU attack as freshmen to complement the contributions of Fretz and Maniscalco.

O'Hara is third on the team with 31 goals and scored 10 goals in three games last week to help ESU qualify for the postseason. She had four goals in a 12-9 win over Millersville, then scored all five of her goals in the second half of a 10-8 win against Shippensburg.

Bradley has 16 goals and eight assists and classmate Michelle Mangiaruga scored 15 goals in the first seven games before going down with a season-ending injury.

Senior Eileen Sanderson and freshman Jamie Wesztergom have started all 17 games in the midfield for the Warriors. Sanderson has three goals and seven assists and is second on the team with 51 ground balls, and Wesztergom has compiled 10 goals and eight assists.
