Halvorsen Throws 1-0 Shutout as Softball Splits at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE - Senior Kristen Halvorsen tossed a two-hit, 1-0 shutout for East Stroudsburg University in the first game, while Millersville posted a 4-1 victory in the second game of a PSAC East softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

Halvorsen, the reigning PSAC East pitcher of the week, threw her first shutout of the season and the 12th of her career at ESU as she set the school record with her 104th career appearance.

She allowed a two-out single in the first and pitched around a leadoff single in the fourth. Millersville's best scoring chance came in the sixth after an error and a walk, but Halvorsen got out of the inning with a groundout to third and retired the side in order in the seventh.

ESU scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Sophomore 2B Briana Malachowski singled to start the game, and freshman DH Brittany Racek reached on a fielders choice and moved up on a wild pitch. Senior 1B Ali Hale singled up the middle to bring Racek home and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead, and Halvorsen made the run stand up.

In the nightcap, Shaina Briel led off the bottom of the first with a home run and pitcher Janelle Mrakovich hit a three-run homer to help her own cause as the Marauders scored all four of their runs in the opening frame.

Mrakovich gave up five hits and struck out 10 batters in earn the win. ESU scored an unearned run in the third inning on an RBI double by Racek.

Sophomore Jackie Battaglino threw five shutout innings in relief of starter Jen Bensinger, who was lifted after the first inning.

The Warriors host Seton Hill in their home opener on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Zimbar Field.
