EAST STROUDSBURG - Sophomore Matt Gallup, an automatic qualifier in the pole vault, is one of eight student-athletes from East Stroudsburg University selected to compete at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held on Memorial Day weekend in southern California.

The Warriors' school-record contingent is comprised of senior Iuri Pinto, who will be competing in the outdoor championships for the fourth straight year, and seven underclassmen. Six sophomores will be making the trip along with freshman Lynn Mayer, who earned All-America honors in the high jump at the indoor championships in March.

Mayer, high jumper Janelle Smith and triple jumper Drew Miller helped ESU set a school record by sending five athletes to the NCAA championships during the indoor season and have also been selected to compete outdoors.

Trina Carito (heptathlon) and Kahla Doran (javelin) join Mayer and Smith to give ESU four female athletes that will compete in the field events. Kenny Cardullo (javelin), Gallup, Miller and Pinto represent the Warriors on the men's side.

Gallup won the PSAC championship in the pole vault with a height of 16-8 3/4, which gave him an automatic spot in the national championship field. He enters with the sixth-best mark in the nation and also won the PSAC indoor title this year while holding the school record in both events.

Pinto won the last two PSAC championships in the 1500m run and adds his fifth career NCAA championship appearance to an impressive list of accomplishments during his time at ESU. He is the Senior Male Athlete of the Year, won three individual PSAC titles and was a member of three straight Distance Medley Relay championship teams, and was a four-time All-PSAC performer in cross country.

Pinto, who was 10th in the mile at this year's NCAA indoor meet, competed in the 10,000m run at the outdoor championships as a freshman and sophomore and the 1500m run as a junior.

Carito ran away with the PSAC heptathlon crown 10 days ago at IUP, scoring 4,661 points and placing in the top three in five of the seven events. She had the top mark in each of the first three events - the 100m hurdles, high jump and shot put - and was second in the long jump and the 800m run. Carito also won a conference title in the indoor triple jump.

Mayer won the high jump in five of the seven meets she entered during the outdoor schedule, including a jump of 5-8 for her top mark of the season to win the women's college eastern high jump at the Penn Relays. She also cleared 5-8 to finish second in the PSAC, and her performance is tied for sixth among athletes scheduled to compete next weekend.

She cleared 5-7 to tie for sixth at the NCAA indoor championships, with the top eight finishers in each event earning All-America status.

Smith also competed at the indoor championships and was 13th after clearing 5-5 on her final jump. She qualified for the outdoor championships with a jump of 5-7 to win the NYC Challenge at Ichan Stadium last weekend.

Miller won the PSAC championship in the triple jump with a distance of 48-5 1/2 for his best mark of the season. He also won the PSAC indoor title and was 10th at the NCAA championships in March with a jump of 46-9.

Cardullo hit his qualifying throw of 202-8 3/4 at the All-American Meet at Eiler-Martin Stadium on April 19. He has a career-best mark of 210-3 which he set as a freshman, and was 14th at last year's NCAA meet with a throw of 188-8.

Doran was second in the javelin at the PSAC championships with a throw of 142-1. The mark was a season best by more than 20 feet and ranks 14th in the nation this season.

The championship meet will be hosted by Cal Poly Pomona and held at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. on May 22-24.
