INDIANA - Sophomore Trina Carito turned in a dominating performance to win the women's heptathlon and sophomore Paul Wagner broke the ESU and PSAC meet records in the men's hammer throw for the Warriors on Friday at the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Freshman Lynn Mayer (high jump) and sophomore Kahla Doran (javelin) both finished second in their events, and sophomore Andrew McCloskey will enter Saturday's final as the top seed in the 200m dash to highlight ESU's efforts in the prelims.

Carito had one of the top 10 performances in Division II this season with 4,661 points and posted the top mark in each of the first three events, placed second in two others and never finished lower than fourth. She won by 362 points over Diane Kress from Clarion, the top seed entering the weekend.

She won the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.90 seconds, took the high jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5-6 1/2 and had the top throw in the shot put with a distance of 31-10.

Carito was fourth in the 200m dash (27.35), second in the long jump (16-10 1/2) and third in the javelin (105-11). She finished the event with a time of 2:23.17 to place second in the 800m run.

Wagner threw 179-5 in the hammer to earn his second conference title after winning the weight throw during the indoor season when he was named the men's field athlete of the meet.

He established new school, stadium and meet records one week after coming within six inches of the school record at the Penn Relays. Scott Weiser set the previous ESU record of 176-5 in 1996. Wagner was also fifth in the discus with a throw of 147-6, and sophomore Tom Sutor was seventh in the hammer.

Mayer cleared 5-8 to finish second in the high jump at her first outdoor PSAC championship. She was an indoor All-American in March and won the women's eastern college high jump at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Carito and freshman Janelle Smith, who also competed at the NCAA indoor championships, were seventh and eighth with marks of 5-3 for the Warriors.

Doran reached the NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a throw of 142-1 to finish second in the javelin, and freshman Allison Cardullo was eighth at 120-5.

Senior Lori Johanson also scored for the ESU women on Friday, placing eighth in the 10,000m run with a time of 41:04.95.

McCloskey clocked a time of 21.67 seconds, .03 seconds off the school record, to win his heat and post the top time in the prelims of the 200m dash. He also advanced to Saturday's final in the 100m dash after placing fifth in 10.81 seconds.

Sophomore Rusty Smith was fifth in the 110m hurdles prelims in 15.07 seconds in his first action since the ESU-Lafayette Quad Meet on March 29 at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Sophomores Chris Reddick and Ed Kiser also moved into the 400m final on Saturday.

Junior Katherine Doyle was third in the prelims in the 100m dash (12.38) and fifth in the 200m (25.73), and also ran the first leg of the 4x100m relay team that was second in the prelims in 48.38 seconds.

Freshman Jasmine Johnson was fourth in the 400m prelims in 57.41 seconds and will also compete in the finals on Saturday. Johnson, freshman Nashanti Iglesias and junior Amilee Schillinger joined Doyle on the 4x100 relay squad.

The men's 4x100 team of freshmen Asher Ashfield and Greg Pammer, along with Reddick and McCloskey, was fifth in the prelims in 42.34 seconds.

ESU's women are fourth with 30.5 points through seven events, and the men are sixth with 16 points with five events scored. The PSAC Championships will conclude with four hours of action on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
