EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior Caitlin Kuhn led a strong defensive effort with 10 blocks as East Stroudsburg University knocked off defending PSAC East women's volleyball regular season champion Shippensburg in five sets on Tuesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors (10-6, 4-2) won the deciding game 15-11 after battling back from 25-15 losses in the second and fourth sets and a 4-1 deficit early in the final game.
ESU went on a 10-2 run to seize control, then won its final four points on Shippensburg's serve with the game-winning kill coming from sophomore outside hitter Brianne Bachman.
ESU won the first set 25-17 and the third 25-22 in going to a fifth set for the fourth time in its six conference matches this season. Shippensburg was 10-0 in the PSAC East last year and falls to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Kuhn, ESU's record holder in career blocks, had seven kills, four solo blocks and six block assists. Senior libero Kim Dormer was also a standout defensively with 25 digs and was one of four Warriors to reach double figures.
Sophomore outside hitter Alyson Stark had a team-high 10 kills and senior Amilee Schillinger had 26 assists; both players also contributed 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Detter had 13 digs and four blocks and Bachman had seven kills.
Freshman middle Heather Paulus had three kills and two blocks and led ESU with a .333 attack percentage.
The Warriors are off until Saturday when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on LeMoyne and St. Michael's.
