EAST STROUDSBURG - The East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the opening night of its first home tournament of the season, earning a hard-fought 3-2 win over Philadelphia University before falling to Queens (N.Y.) in three sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Alyson Stark led the Warriors' effort with 13 kills on a .370 hitting percentage and also had five aces. Middle blockers Caitlin Kuhn (six kills) and Heather Paulus (four kills) combined to hit .409, and ESU had a solid .221 hitting percentage for the match.
ESU (4-3) dominated the first set with a 25-15 win, then saw the match tighten up as Philadelphia won the second and fourth sets to force the deciding game. The Warriors went out to a quick lead, winning eight of the first 10 points, and closed the match with a 15-9 victory.
Senior setter Amilee Schillinger had 34 assists and led the defense with 10 digs, and senior Linsey Sewalk played the final three games and posted four kills and four blocks.
Kuhn had three blocks against Philadelphia and two against Queens to move within one of the school record of 302, which was set by Lora Gibson from 1990-93. The senior from Jim Thorpe will enter Saturday's matches against Shepherd and St. Rose with 301 blocks in her career and already has the top two single-season marks in school history.
