EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University suffered its first loss of the season after a 4-0 start as Shippensburg earned a 2-1 win over the Warriors in non-conference field hockey on Sunday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

The Raiders, ranked No. 4 in the NFHCA preseason coaches poll, scored both of their goals in the first half and held off a determined ESU squad that came back from a two-goal deficit in a 3-2 overtime win at Kutztown last Wednesday.

Kim Davies opened the scoring for the Raiders less than 10 minutes into the game on a penalty corner, with the assist coming from Carolyn Swift. Amanda Strous added another goal, which proved to be the game-winner, on a pass from Davies with 40 seconds left until halftime.

Senior April Sutton put the Warriors on the board with her second goal of the season 13:02 into the second half when she finished a play that started with a shot by sophomore Caitlin Brownley.

ESU had a couple of chances in the closing minutes but the Shippensburg defense was up to the task. Goalkeeper Amanda Houser made four saves, while senior Carolyn Kisling had seven saves for the Warriors.

ESU will look for a 2-0 start in PSAC East play when it hosts defending national champion Bloomsburg on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
