EAST STROUDSBURG - Angel Stephens had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Cheyney closed the game on an 8-0 run to beat East Stroudsburg University 73-63 in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Senior forward Jackie Yandrisevits recorded her sixth 20-point, 10-rebound game of the season with 24 points and 11 boards and also contributed two steals and three blocks for ESU. Senior guard Keri Cahill tied her career-high with eight assists and added six points and six rebounds.
Cheyney (8-5, 3-1) took a 38-34 lead into the locker room and led 45-39 after a three-point play by Stephens just over three minutes into the second half before the Warriors went on a 16-4 stretch to take their biggest lead of the game with 11:08 to play.
ESU (8-9, 1-3) scored eight straight points during the run, which included three assists from Cahill on buckets by Yandrisevits, junior center Alexa Detzi and freshman guard Cyara Woodridge. Sophomore guard Kristen Murray hit a three-pointer, freshman forward Becky Hayter had a layup on a pass from freshman guard Jennifer Scherer and Cahill closed the run with a three-pointer that put the Warriors ahead 55-49.
Stephanie Orji scored five straight points for Cheyney, and the Wolves eventually took the lead for good on a jumper by Stephens with 7:29 remaining. The Warriors twice closed within a point, the final time at 63-62, but didn't score over the final 4:54 of the game.
Orji (nine points, eight rebounds) and Lutfiyya Muhammad (16 points) complemented Stephens in the scoring column for the Wolves. Muhammad also had eight of Cheyney's 18 steals which they turned into 25 points.
Murray scored nine points in her first start of the season as junior guard Mel Villano missed the second start of her career after suffering an injury in Wednesday's win over Bloomsburg.
Hayter (six points, two rebounds, two steals) and Scherer (four points, three assists) both had strong games off the bench for the Warriors.
ESU heads to Mansfield for conference action on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
