EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman midfielder
Crystal Zerbe tied the game with five seconds left in regulation to help East Stroudsburg University earn a point in the PSAC East women's soccer standings with a 2-2 tie vs. Shippensburg on Tuesday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The Warriors and Raiders played 110 minutes in both of their matches this year, with a 1-1 tie at Shippensburg on Sept. 16 and Tuesday night's 2-2 deadlock. ESU (10-4-2, 4-3-2) is third in the PSAC East with 14 points going into its final three games of the regular season.
Zerbe's goal, her third of the season, came after the Warriors had two shots blocked in front of the net in the final 15 seconds. She beat Shippensburg goalkeeper Beth Long inside the right post to send the game into overtime, where ESU held a 7-1 advantage in shots. The Warriors had two great chances in the last four minutes of the second overtime but Long came up with saves, tipping the ball over the crossbar, to maintain the tie score.
Long had 11 saves in the game on 35 shots by the Warriors. She made 17 saves, her career-high, on 30 shots in the first meeting this season.
Shippensburg (5-7-3, 2-4-3) took a 1-0 lead moments into the game when Gayle Kuntzmann got behind the ESU defense for an unassisted goal with just 2:41 off the clock.
Despite an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first half, the Warriors didn't get on the board until sophomore midfielder
Devon Miniscalco converted a penalty kick 6:46 into the second half after freshman forward
Bridget Connell was taken down in the box.
ESU controlled most of the rest of the contest, but Shippensburg scored a second goal off a counter attack when Katie Leverentz found Kuntzmann for the go-ahead goal with 6:09 remaining. It looked like the goal would stand up as the game-winner until the Warriors made a final push that produced the tying goal in the closing seconds.
Miniscalco scored her 10th goal of the season and is the top scorer on an offense that has generated 50 goals in 16 games, the most in the PSAC. The Warriors brought a five-game winning streak into Tuesday's match and would have matched their longest winning streak since 1994 with a victory.
ESU is unbeaten since Sept. 22 and travels to Kutztown on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match with the Golden Bears.
