ESU Wrestling Goes 3-0, Knocks Off No. 19 Mercyhurst at Seton Hill Duals

GREENSBURG – Redshirt sophomores Andrew Arnold (133), Adam Hluschak (141) and Ken Monarque (174) all won three matches as East Stroudsburg University went 3-0 at the Seton Hill Duals on Saturday, including a 26-16 victory over No. 19 Mercyhurst.

The Warriors dropped just four matches on the mat in posting victories over Mercyhurst North East (48-6), Mercyhurst and Seton Hill (32-9), and earned bonus points in 15 of their 23 wins.

ESU had six pins to take out Mercyhurst North East in its first match of the day. Arnold, sophomore Eddie Stephenson (149), redshirt sophomore Thad Frick (157), Monarque, redshirt senior Shane Mallory (184) and freshman Will Weaver (285) all won by fall, and Hluschak had a 16-1 technical fall.

Junior Ed Ebewo punctuated the Warriors' win over No. 19 Mercyhurst with a second-period pin of Chris Nocchi in the 197-pound match-up, as ESU entered the bout with a 21-12 lead.

ESU gave up a forfeit at 125 before Arnold posted a 20-5 technical fall, Hluschak had a 5-1 decision and junior Jesse Dunn recorded a pin in 33 seconds to take a 14-6 advantage through the 149-pound bout.

The Lakers answered with a pair of decisions from the No. 1-ranked wrestlers in Division II in their weight classes in Andy Lamancusa (157) and Josh Shields (165) to pull within 14-12. Lamancusa and Frick went into overtime tied at 4-4 before Lamancusa scored a takedown in the second sudden victory session for a 6-4 win, and Shields had a 6-0 decision over redshirt junior Jeff Jacobs.

Monarque came through with a 4-2 decision over Patrick Carter to keep ESU in front, Mallory earned a 9-4 decision against Eric Lundgren and Ebewo's pin at 197 sealed the victory. Mercyhurst heavyweight Fred Hale had a 12-4 major decision over Weaver in the final bout of the match.

ESU won eight of the 10 bouts against host Seton Hill to wrap up the day with a perfect 3-0 record and level its dual record at 3-3 on the season.

Arnold won by medical forfeit and Hluschak (18-11) and Dunn (11-7) both won by decision to put ESU ahead 12-6. Frick followed with a 10-2 major decision, Jacobs and Monarque posted victories by decision and sophomore James Gonzalez had a 10-0 major decision in his first career dual action at 184.

Seton Hill's Nick Padezan notched a 3-2 decision over Ebewo at 197, and Weaver finished the match with his second pin of the day, decking Pat McClure in 3:25.

Hluschak improved to 10-5 and is the first Warrior to reach double-digit victories this season, with six coming by bonus points. Arnold is 8-8 with seven bonus point victories, including a team-best four falls. Jacobs is 9-7 and Mallory (8-4) and Monarque (8-5) have also reached eight victories.

ESU is back in action on Monday, December 28 at the Wilkes Open.
