EAST STROUDSBURG – No. 10 Pitt-Johnstown used 23 points from its five nationally-ranked wrestlers to defeat East Stroudsburg University, 35-4, in the Warriors' first dual of the season on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Redshirt sophomore Thad Frick earned the only win of the night for ESU at 157 pounds with a 13-5 major decision. Frick had three first-period takedowns to establish an early lead, and used the riding time point to push his advantage to eight and pick up his third career major decision.

UPJ had two pins and two major decisions from its quintent of wrestlers with top 10 national rankings in Division II. No. 1-ranked Shane Valko (133) won by fall at 3:27 against redshirt sophomore Andrew Arnold, and No. 6 Chris Dempsey ended the night at 285 with a first-period pin (1:49) over freshman Will Weaver.

No. 4 Kyle Keane (165) posted a 15-3 score and No. 6 Patrick Walsh (184) had a 16-4 victory for the Mountain Cats' major decisions. No. 1 Adam Whetstone (141) won by a 15-8 decision over redshirt sophomore Adam Hluschak.

ESU dropped three one-point decisions, at 149, 174 and 197. Ryan McIntyre held the riding time advantage for a 2-1 victory in his bout with sophomore Eddie Stephenson at 149, Steve Makin won 5-4 over redshirt sophomore Ken Monarque at 174 and A.J. Brentzel edged junior Ed Ebewo, 4-3, at 197.

The Warriors were making their first appearance at the NCAA Division II level after reclassifying from Division I. They travel to Edinboro for the PSAC Championships this weekend and return to dual action on Sunday, December 13 with a tri-meet against Buffalo and Drexel beginning at 11 a.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
