CALDWELL, N.J. – Homestanding Caldwell College pulled away from a one-point lead with 7:30 to play to post a 61-53 win over East Stroudsburg University on Sunday afternoon in the ECAC Holiday Classic.
Senior forward
DeAnna Rayam and senior guard
Mel Villano both scored 12 points for the Warriors, who took a 33-31 lead into halftime and led for the first four minutes of the second half.
Caldwell took the lead for good with 13:30 to play after freshman guard
Barb Borst hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 42-all on ESU's previous possession. The Warriors made it a 50-49 game on a layup by Villano with less than eight minutes left, but Caldwell responded with a three-pointer by Kirsty Leedham and a layup by Ebony Thomas to go ahead by six.
Rayam had a steal and layup to pull the Warriors within 56-53 at the four-minute mark, but ESU wouldn't score again and Leedham hit the game's final field goal with 2:07 to play to help give Caldwell its final cushion.
Sophomore guard
Cyara Woodridge scored nine points, including a three-pointer with 51 seconds left in the first half to give ESU (1-8) its largest lead of the game at 33-28. Sophomore forward
Jennifer Scherer scored six points, Villano had a team-high six rebounds and Rayam set her career-high with six steals.
Torey Jones led Caldwell (4-5) with 15 points and nine rebounds, Abena George scored 10 points and Gillian Felix and Kaitlyn Lambert had eight points each.
ESU is away from action until Saturday, January 2 with a home date against Clarion at 1 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
