WILKES-BARRE – Redshirt senior Shane Mallory (184) and junior Ed Ebewo (197) both placed third and redshirt sophomore Thad Frick (157) won seven straight consolation bouts and finished fourth to lead East Stroudsburg University at the Wilkes Open on Monday.

Redshirt sophomore Ken Monarque made the quarterfinals at 174 and redshirt junior Jeff Jacobs won four matches in the consolations at 165 to give the Warriors five wrestlers who had outstanding showings at the 77th annual tournament.

Mallory, who was the runner-up at 174 at Wilkes as a redshirt sophomore, won his first two matches by major decision and technical fall before falling to Kadeem Samuels of Lehigh by a 3-2 decision in the semifinals. He came back with a pair of decisions, 8-2 over Nate Shippee (Williams) and 3-0 over Dan Seidenberg (Rutgers) in the consolation final to place third.

Ebewo and Frick both took longer paths to their places in the final brackets. Ebewo won by decision in the opening round, fell to Lamar Brown (Rutgers) by a 3-1 decision in his second match and then posted five straight victories to finish third at 197. His trip through the consolations included consecutive wins over wrestlers from Maryland, Tom Sitar (5-1) and Dallas Brown (5-3 sv), a 15-1 major decision of David Khovin (Nassau), a medical forfeit over Rex Harris (Wilkes) and finally a 4-1 decision over Ronald Ellsworth (VMI).

Frick was on the mat for nine matches on Monday after wrestling back from a 10-5 setback to eventual runner-up Ramon Santiago (Rider) in the first round. He recorded a pair of first period pins to begin a run of seven straight victories, which also included three decisions and two technical falls, the second a 24-5 dismantling of Edward Shupe (Shippensburg) to make the consolation final. Ryan McGarity (Binghamton) ended Frick's day with a 12-0 major decision, but Frick still improved to 13-8 on the season to top his 12-9 mark from a year ago.

Monarque earned a 5-3 decision over Steve Makin (UPJ) in first round action, avenging a 5-4 loss to Makin in dual action earlier in the month, and won by technical fall (19-2) against Will Harcum (Apprentice) to move into the quarterfinals. Steven Cressley (Clarion) and Anthony Esposito (Binghamton) posted decisions over Monarque in the consolation bracket.

Jacobs dropped his first match, 7-3 to eventual consolation finalist P.J. Tasser (Pittsburg), before rattling off four straight wins to finish one match away from a rematch with Tasser in the third-fourth place bout. He surrendered just four points in three victories by decision, then took out James Brundage (Rider) with a 20-6 major decision before falling to Ryan Leblanc (Indiana) by a 10-3 score.

Redshirt sophomore Adam Hluschak (141) and freshman Will Weaver (285) also won two matches each for the Warriors, all in consolation action. Hluschak pinned Danny O'Malley (Maryland) in 1:37 and had a 6-4 decision over Cullen Isenberg (Rutgers), and Weaver decisioned Dylan Smith (Clarion), 3-2 in sudden victory, and won by medical forfeit over Zeke Pyle (Delaware Valley).

The Warriors return to action on Tuesday, January 5 with dual action against Wilkes at 1 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
