EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior forward DeAnna Rayam scored 14 points, sophomore forward Jennifer Scherer added a career-high 13 and East Stroudsburg University earned its first women's basketball victory of the season with a 70-35 win over Salem International on Saturday afternoon in the 45th Annual Pocono Classic presented by the Lehigh Valley International Airport.

Rayam and senior guard Mel Villano (three points, four assists, four steals vs. Salem) both scored 17 points in Thursday night's game vs. Shippensburg and were named to the All-Tournament team. Shippensburg placed three on the All-Tournament team in Lauren Beckley (MVP), Kasey Gardner and Isabel Scott, and Salem International was represented by Emily Bowles.

The 35 points allowed are the fewest since the Warriors posted a 103-30 win over Penn State-Hazleton during the 2006-07 season. ESU limited Salem International to a field goal percentage of 18.3 (11-60) and forced 20 turnovers, while producing an offensive effort that saw all 11 players in uniform get in the scoring column.

Scherer was 6-for-11 from the field, including a three-pointer, for her career-high 13 points and posted seven rebounds to help the Warriors (1-4) to a 57-43 margin on the glass. Sophomore guard Cyara Woodridge had seven points and a career-best seven rebounds and senior center Alexa Detzi had eight points and seven boards.

The freshmen also contributed, with guard Barb Borst setting new season-highs with nine points and five rebounds while settling in the starting lineup in her first five career games. Guard Angel Gaffney scored five points, center Kelly Sorber had four points and five rebounds and center Deonna Overton recorded four points and six rebounds in eight minutes in her first career action.

ESU got off to a solid start in the first four minutes, then went on a 16-0 run over the next six-minute segment to seize control. Consecutive buckets by Borst gave the Warriors the lead and Scherer capped the run with a three-pointer and a fast-break layup after a steal by Rayam to make the score 23-7 at the 10-minute mark.

The lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way, including a 37-14 margin at halftime. Borst and Scherer both scored seven first-half points and nine players had already scored at intermission, while Rayam led ESU with nine points in the second half.

Rayam and Villano combined for 51 points, 15 rebounds, 14 assists and 15 steals in the two games in their final Pocono Classic, and Rayam was named to the All-Tournament time for the third time in her career.

ESU returns to action next weekend in a tournament at Salem International and will face Central State on Friday and Urbana on Saturday in Salem, W.V.
