EDINBORO – Redshirt senior Shane Mallory knocked off No. 2 seed Clint Podish of Clarion in the semifinals and was the runner-up at 184 pounds, and East Stroudsburg University placed four wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes to finish sixth at the 2009 PSAC Wrestling Championships, held Saturday at Edinboro University.

Redshirt sophomore Adam Hluschak (141) placed fifth and redshirt sophomore Andrew Arnold (133) and junior Ed Ebewo (197) were both sixth as the Warriors (49.5 points) edged Kutztown (48.0) and Mercyhurst (47.5) for the sixth spot in the standings. Ebewo was one of just two unseeded wrestlers to reach the semifinals in the tournament.

ESU was second among the five NCAA Division II schools in the PSAC. Edinboro won its fifth straight PSAC title, followed by Bloomsburg, Clarion and Lock Haven, who all compete in Division I. Gannon was fifth with 62.0 points, and ESU, Kutztown, Mercyhurst, Millersville (DI) and Shippensburg rounded out the 10-team field.

Mallory finished in the top three in the PSAC for the third time in his career while competing in three different weight classes. He was third at 174 in 2007 and third at 197 in 2008 and entered this year's tournament seeded No. 3 in the 184-pound bracket. Mallory earned a 14-6 major decision over Eric Lundgren (Mercyhurst) in the quarterfinals and scored a 3-1 decision in his semifinal match-up with Podish to move into the finals, where he fell 11-6 to No. 1 Patrick Bradshaw of Edinboro.

Hluschak, Arnold and Ebewo all had busy days for the Warriors and finished above their seeds entering the tournament. Hluschak came in ranked No. 6 at 141 and began his day with a second-period pin (4:30) of Cameron Moran (Clarion) before dropping a 10-7 decision vs. No. 3 Frank Hickman (Bloomsburg). He came back with a 15-3 major decision of Adam Green (Gannon), was pinned in the second period by No. 4 Owen Wilkinson (Lock Haven) in the consolation semifinals and was awarded a medical forfeit over No. 2 Nate Nauroth (Shippensburg) in the fifth-sixth place match.

Arnold didn't see much mat time in his six bouts at 133 which all ended with falls. He was on the right side of three of his first four decisions, opening with a pin of Danny Gaylord (Bloomsburg) in 1:17, was taken to the mat by Austin Williams (Kutztown) in the third period and then posted consecutive second-period pins of Levi Smeltzer (Mercyhurst, 3:47) and Russell Davidson (Shippensburg, 3:27) in the consolations.

Arnold's day ended with two more pins, falling to No. 3 John Trumbetti (Lock Haven) in 1:11 in the consolation semis and suffering a pin with one second left in his final bout against Ashton Osterberg (Edinboro).

Ebewo took out seeded wrestlers in his first two bouts, both by decision, to reach the semifinals after seeing his first mat time of the year last Wednesday against Pitt-Johnstown. He earned a 7-3 victory over No. 5 Harry Turner (Lock Haven) and a 6-3 decision against No. 4 Jacob Dabishinsky (Bloomsburg) to crash the semifinals, where he fell 10-0 to No. 1 Shawn Fendone (Edinboro).

Chris Nocchi (Mercyhurst) posted a 7-5 decision in Ebewo's next bout, and No. 3 Scott Snyder (Kutztown) narrowly avoided becoming the third seeded wrestler to fall to Ebewo with a 2-1 sudden victory decision in the fifth-sixth place match-up.

Redshirt junior Jeff Jacobs (165) and freshman Will Weaver (285) also won matches for ESU on Saturday. Jacobs posted a pair of wins, with a 9-1 major decision over David Sunderland (Shippensburg) in the first round and an 8-0 major of Ted Hoag (Gannon) after falling to No. 3 Rick Schmelyun (Bloomsburg) in the quarterfinals.

Weaver knocked off Justin Grant (Kutztown), 7-4, in opening round action before falling to No. 3 Dan Craig (Lock Haven) and No. 5 Nathan Sharp (Mercyhurst) in his final two matches.

ESU will return to dual action next Sunday, taking on Buffalo and Drexel in a tri-meet beginning at 11 a.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
