NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior sprinters Jeff McClenton and Chris Reddick both set school records and juniors Janelle Smith (high jump), Amanda Sines (shot put) and Paul Wagner (weight throw) each won their events as East Stroudsburg University competed against a strong Division I field at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational on Friday night at the Armory in New York City.
The times turned in by McClenton (200m, 22.29) and Reddick (400m, 49.29) were both school records for a banked track. Junior Andrew McCloskey, the previous record-holder in the 200m, equaled the time of 22.36 that he posted at last year's PSAC championships, and McClenton ran 22.29 in the next heat to win by more than a half-second and place seventh overall.
Reddick's time of 49.29 seconds eclipsed the previous record of 49.49 that was clocked by Ed Kiser at the 2008 PSAC championships. He placed sixth in the event and was the top Division II finisher. The conversion rate of .20 seconds per lap on a banked track still give McCloskey and Kiser the records for events run on a flat track like the surface at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Smith and sophomore Lynn Mayer both cleared 5-5 to finish first and second in the women's high jump, with Smith winning on the number of jumps. Freshman Devyn Emerich was fourth. The trio has combined for five wins in the seven indoor meets that the Warriors have attended this season, missing out only at Lehigh and Delaware.
Sines had a throw of 39-11 1/2 to win the women's shot put and also finished fourth in the weight with a season-best throw of 48-8 3/4. Wagner has won the men's weight in all seven indoor meets this winter and had a throw of 59-10 on Friday night at the Armory.
The women's 4x400m relay team finished third in 3:56.75, the third-fastest time in school history and just off last year's time at the same event. Sophomore Brittiny Mackey led off in 59.3, followed by a time of 58.3 from sophomore Jasmine Johnson and a time of 60.1 by junior Emily Hollick. Senior Katherine Doyle ran the final 400m in 58.8 seconds.
Johnson posted season-bests in both the 200m (26.17) and 400m (58.46), where she ran within a second of the school record and was seventh in a field of 50 athletes, along with her 58.3 split in the mile relay.
Hollick ran a three-second season-best in the 800m (2:24.43) one week after posting a season-best time by nearly four seconds in the 500m on the same track at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Senior Katherine Doyle's time of 8.04 seconds in the 60m dash placed her 10th overall and was her best of the year.
Junior Niki Pasquarella was sixth in the 5000m with a time of 18:38.69, the first time she has competed in the event this winter.
On the men's side, the Warriors had several outstanding performances that were overshadowed only by the school records in the 200 and 400. Junior Rusty Smith ran a time of 8.24 seconds to finish second in the 60m hurdles, and McClenton and sophomore Asher Ashfield both had the fastest time over 60m for an ESU men's athlete this season, clocking identical marks of 7.15 seconds in separate heats.
The middle distance and distance runners also lowered their times in the 800m, 3000m and 5000m. Freshman Greg Laraia ran a 23-second season-best in the 5000 (15:28.29), sophomore Chris Zadroga ran the 3000 in 8:47.24, and junior Ryan Doyle broke the two-minute mark in the 800 in 1:59.51.
In the field events, juniors Matthew Gallup (pole vault, 15-3) and Drew Miller (triple jump, 46-6 3/4) were both sixth in their events.
ESU has one meet remaining, next Friday's Keough Invitational at Haverford, before hosting the 2009 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 28 and March 1 at Koehler Fieldhouse.
