EAST STROUDSBURG - Matt Swallow, Scott Heckman and Kyle Heselpoth combined to go 5-0 on Senior Day as East Stroudsburg University wrapped up its 2008-09 wrestling dual schedule with a pair of wins over Wagner (50-3) and Delaware State (24-12) on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Five Warriors had first-period pins against Wagner, including Swallow (133) and Heckman (149), and Heselpoth recorded a 21-4 technical fall at 157 in his only action on the mat this season after returning from injury. Swallow, a two-year captain, leads the Warriors with 61 career wins.
Redshirt freshman Thad Frick had a 9-3 decision over Sean Quinn at 165 before ESU closed the match with four consecutive pins. There were 19 seconds left in the second period when redshirt sophomore Jeff Jacobs got his fall, and the final three - sophomore Ed Ebewo, redshirt junior Shane Mallory and junior Chris Birchler - were all done by the end of the first period.
Birchler's pin in 49 seconds was the 10th of his career and the fourth time he has finished the match in less than a minute. He improved to 21-4 with two wins on Sunday and went 25-10 last season.
The match-up with Delaware State was much closer and featured three bouts that were decided in sudden victory before ESU won five of the final six matches.
The schools traded bonus points at the start, as Delaware State's Wilson Williams opened with a pin before Swallow recorded an 18-2 technical fall midway through the third period.
The first of the three overtime matches went to Delaware State at 141, where Kelvin Watford scored a 7-5 decision over freshman Matt Michaels. Both schools forfeited at 149 as the Warriors bumped Heckman up to 157 to wrestle Brandon Gardner. Heckman had a pair of escapes after Gardner recorded the only takedown in the first seven minutes to send the match into overtime, and Heckman notched a takedown with 20 seconds left for a 4-2 win.
Redshirt freshman Ken Monarque and Jacobs followed with decisions to give ESU a 14-8 lead before Chris Woodall's 3-1 overtime decision against Ebewo at 184. Mallory posted a 13-4 major decision over Shawn Nowrey to give the Warriors an 18-12 lead, and Birchler held a 4-1 edge over Eric Sewell before Sewell was forced to retire due to injury.
ESU closes its dual schedule with a 7-13-1 record and was 4-1-1 in the last two weeks. The Warriors will travel to the Palestra at the University of Pennsylvania for the 105th Annual EIWA Championships on March 7-8.
