EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior Chris Reddick set East Stroudsburg University records in the 200 and 400 meters and was named the Men's Co-Track Athlete of the Meet after leading the Warriors' men's team to their third straight third-place finish at the 2009 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, which concluded on Sunday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Reddick shattered his one-day old record in the 200m with a time of 21.86 seconds, one-hundredth of a second off the NCAA Division II automatic qualifying standard. The time also gave Reddick the PSAC and Koehler Fieldhouse records and lowered the previous record of 22.08 which he ran in the prelims on Saturday. Reddick was also second in the 400m with a record time of 49.11 seconds and shared the men's track athlete of the meet award with Shippensburg distance runner Bryan Beegle.
Shippensburg edged Lock Haven, 134-129, for the men's title with the Warriors scoring 120 points for a strong third-place finish. On the women's side, Slippery Rock held off Shippensburg in the 4x400m relay, the final event of the day, to take a 146-142 victory of Shippensburg. ESU finished sixth with 41 points.
Ship's Don Graybill was the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet and the men's overall athlete of the meet. Shippensburg's Neely Spence (track), Slippery Rock's Whitney Hendershot (field) and IUP's Maddy Outman (overall) were honored on the women's side.
Junior Rusty Smith won his first PSAC championship in the 55m hurdles, where he outleaned California's Brice Myers at the tape to win by five-thousandths of a second (7.594-7.599).
In the men's triple jump, junior Drew Miller earned his third career PSAC title in the event with a mark of 48-1 1/4, which exceeds the NCAA provisional standard. Freshman Brandon Hillman also had a provisional mark of 47-8 and was third in the event.
ESU had a total of five PSAC champions, including three athletes who defended their titles from a year ago. Junior Matthew Gallup (pole vault), junior Paul Wagner (weight) and Miller are all multiple-time conference champions, while Smith and Reddick both captured their first crowns.
Junior Andrew McCloskey backed up Reddick's record-breaking performances by finishing third in both the 55m (6.51) and 200m (22.27). His time in the 200 surpassed the record he set at last year's championships, which Reddick snapped in the prelims.
Senior Katherine Doyle was third in the women's 55m dash (7.25) one day after running an NCAA provisional time of 7.22. Doyle was fourth in the 200m (26.18), and sophomore Jasmine Johnson placed fifth in the 400m (58.24). Sophomores Brittiny Mackey and Brittany Knowles were seventh and eighth in the finals of the 55m hurdles.
The Warriors had a number of other strong performances in the field events, led by freshman Dan Johnson, who was fourth in the high jump and sixth in the heptathlon. Junior Colin Feeney finished fourth in the heptathlon after entering the final three events in eighth place.
In the high jump, junior Kenny Cardullo (fifth) and senior Shane Burrows (eighth) gave ESU three of the top eight finishers in the event.
The Warriors also had three athletes place in the top eight of the women's high jump - freshman Devyn Emerich (fourth, 5-5 3/4), sophomore Lynn Mayer (fifth, 5-3 3/4) and junior Janelle Smith (tied-sixth, 5-1 3/4).
Wagner, who won his second straight title in the weight throw on Saturday, was fourth in the men's shot put. Two Warriors scored in the shot put on the women's side, where junior Emily Carothers was seventh and junior Amanda Sines was eighth.
The ESU women wrapped up the meet with a fourth-place finish the 4x400m relay. The squad of Brittiny Mackey, Johnson, Emily Hollick and Doyle ran the mile relay in 4:00.95.
The Warriors' provisional qualifiers will await their status for the 2009 NCAA championships, which will be held in Houston as part of the Division II national championship festival on March 13-14. The complete field for the NCAA's will be announced early next week.
