HOUSTON, Texas - Junior Rusty Smith joined 2008 Hall of Fame inductee Jack Goldowski as the only East Stroudsburg University athletes to earn multiple All-America honors in the hurdles after placing fifth in the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Yeoman Field House.
Smith ran an official time of 8.18 seconds (8.178), five-thousandths of a second behind St. Augustine's Jason Boyd. Andrew McDowell of Abilene Christian, the top qualifier going into the finals, beat the field by .14 seconds and finished in 7.92.
Smith was eighth a year ago to earn All-America honors. He was seeded ninth going into the championships this year and had the third-fastest qualifying time (8.08) on Friday night.
Goldowski was sixth in the 400m intermediate hurdles during the outdoor season in 1984 and 1985, and was inducted into the ESU Athletic Hall of Fame last fall.
ESU has had 27 student-athletes earn a total of 53 All-America honors in track and field at the NCAA Division II Championships.
