BRISTOL - Senior first baseman Kerri Jakobsen went 4-for-4 and was one of three Warriors to hit home runs to lead East Stroudsburg University to an 8-3 win at Holy Family in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
Holy Family (5-11) won the first game 5-1, scoring three runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game, and got a four-hit complete game effort from pitcher Jody Searfoss.
The Warriors (9-6) hit Angela DiBeneditto hard in the nightcap with four runs on seven hits in the first inning. Sophomore SS Brittany Racek singled and scored, freshman 3B Rachel Gieringer hit a two-run homer and Jakobsen followed with a solo shot to stake ESU to an early lead. Gieringer has three home runs in the first 15 games of her career.
ESU struck again in the third as Jakobsen led off with a double and scored on a double by sophomore OF Jamie Mingis. Feist belted her 10th career home run in the fourth which put ESU ahead 6-0 before Holy Family plated its first run in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams got a pair of runs in the sixth inning to close the scoring. Gieringer and Jakobsen collected RBI singles for ESU, while Searfoss hit a two-run homer for Holy Family.
ESU had 15 hits in the contest, led by Jakobsen's four-hit game. Feist was 3-for-4 and scored three times and Gieringer went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Racek had two of ESU's four hits in the opener.
Senior pitcher Jennifer Bensinger improved to 5-2 with her fourth complete game of the year. She gave up four hits and recorded nine strikeouts and didn't give up a run until the fourth inning after the Warriors had built a 6-0 lead. Junior Jackie Battaglino went the distance in the first game and fell to 4-3.
ESU hosts Mercy College on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in its home opener at Zimbar Field.
