MILLERSVILLE - Sophomore
Michelle Mangiaruga scored four goals and capped East Stroudsburg University's comeback with the game-winner with 34 seconds left as the Warriors won 16-15 at Millersville in PSAC East lacrosse on Wednesday.
ESU (3-3, 2-0) didn't lead in the second half until Mangiaruga's final goal and trailed 15-13 after Kelly Kemper scored her third goal of the game with 3:14 left. Sophomore Morgan Knowles (three goals, one assist) converted a free position shot with 2:32 remaining, and the Warriors scored twice in the final minute to come from behind.
Freshman Jessica Curran tied the game at 15-all with 53 seconds left. Junior Sara Foley won the draw control and Mangiaruga scored unassisted 15 seconds later to put the Warriors in front.
The Marauders (1-2, 0-2) had a chance to tie just before the final whistle but preseason All-American Liz Weekley's shot went wide of the goal. Weekley scored two goals for Millersville and four other players scored three goals each.
For ESU, sophomores Christine Bradley and Molly O'Hara both scored three goals and teamed with Mangiaruga and Knowles to give the Warriors four players with hat tricks. Senior Kirstin Mayberry made 11 saves in goal.
Neither team led by more than three goals, with ESU holding its largest lead at 6-3 with 8:06 left in the first half after the Warriors outscored the Marauders 5-1 over a stretch of nearly 15 minutes.
Millersville scored the final four goals of the half to lead 7-6. O'Hara found the net just under a minute into the second half to tie the game at 7-7, and Bradley's goal with 20 minutes left made it 10-10, but ESU wouldn't take the lead until the final goal of the game.
The Marauders' 13-10 margin midway through the second half was their largest lead before Riegel and Bradley netted goals a minute apart to bring ESU within one at the nine-minute mark. The Warriors held a 6-2 advantage over the final 10:05 to earn a critical early season conference road victory.
ESU has won three of its last four games heading into Monday's home game with defending PSAC and NCAA Division II champion West Chester at 4 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
