KUTZTOWN - Kaitlin Arbogast limited East Stroudsburg University to just three hits and no runs in nine innings as Kutztown defeated the Warriors, 5-0 and 9-5, in a PSAC East softball doubleheader on Friday at North Campus Field.
Arbogast went the full seven innings in the opening game, striking out nine and allowing just two runners to reach second as ESU managed only two hits in the loss. The Golden Bears (28-6, 4-0) did most of their damage in the fourth inning, racking up four runs on three hits, highlighted by a two RBI double by Krista Cameron. Kutztown added their fifth run in the sixth on a solo shot by Ashley Fitzgerald.
The Warriors (12-9, 1-3) responded early in the second game with two runs in the first inning on RBI singles from senior C Amanda Feist and freshman 3B Rachel Gieringer. After a run-scoring single by Kutztown in their half of first, a solo home run by junior OF Kara Darcey, her fourth of the season, put ESU up 3-1 going into the bottom of the third.
The Golden Bears then registered back-to-back three-run innings to go on top, 7-3. Two of those runs came off the bat of Steph Denlinger, who in the process became the PSAC's all-time leader in career RBI with 205.
A double by Gieringer in the fifth scored Darcey and sophomore OF Jamie Mingis, bringing the Warriors back to within two, at 7-5. Arbogast came in to finish off ESU in the final two innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two while collecting the save. Kutztown added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to pad its advantage.
Gieringer finished the second game 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Warriors. Racek was 2-for-4 and Darcey was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Mary Hoch earned the win in 3.2 innings of relief for the Golden Bears while Denlinger finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Cameron and Krista Tedjeske each registered two RBI for Kutztown.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Shippensburg for a doubleheader against the Raiders.
