Box Scores - W 4-3 / W 5-3
EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior outfielder Amanda Dice went 5-for-6 and drove in the game-winning run in both games as East Stroudsburg University swept a PSAC East softball doubleheader from Millersville, 4-3 and 5-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Zimbar Field.
ESU (14-11, 3-5) came back from a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the first game, then scored all of its runs in the fifth and sixth innings to come from behind again in the nightcap.
The Warriors had 16 hits in the first game but managed just a pair of first-inning runs and found themselves behind after Millersville put up three runs in the sixth.
Junior OF Kara Darcey started the rally with a one-out single and sophomore OF Jamie Mingis followed with a base hit to put the winning run on base. Millersville went to the bullpen and brought in Brittany Peterson to relieve Courtney Eckman, but the Marauders couldn't get out of the inning.
Freshman DH Brittany Zanzalari singled to score pinch runner Caitlin Rosenbaum and tie the game at 3-3, and Dice singled to right field to plate Zanzalari with the winning run two batters later and give the Warriors the 4-3 win.
Sophomore SS Brittany Racek tripled and scored on a throwing error to lead off the bottom of the first, and Darcey drove in freshman 3B Rachel Gieringer with a base hit to give ESU a 2-0 lead after one inning.
The Warriors had at least one hit in every inning but didn't score again until the seventh. Meanwhile, senior Jennifer Bensinger held the Marauders scoreless until the sixth inning, when Samantha Jackson doubled to tie the game and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Ally Homa. Bensinger improved to 7-6 and threw her ninth complete game of the season while allowing two earned runs on eight hits.
Peterson threw all six innings in the second game for the Marauders and took the loss in both ends of the doubleheader. She gave up two hits in the seventh inning of the first game, with all of the runs charged to Eckman (6.1 innings, 14 hits, four runs, three earned).
In game two, it was Millersville's turn to jump out to an early lead as Ally Homa tripled and scored on a groundout in the first inning. Homa drove in two runs with a two-out single in the fourth inning to put the Marauders ahead 3-0 before ESU came back.
The Warriors pulled within 3-2 on a two RBI double by Racek that scored pinch runner Alicea Ashe and Dice, who doubled, and ESU got three more runs in the sixth to go in front.
Feist tripled off the top of the fence in right field to open the inning and scored after Darcey's foul ball down the left field line was caught by Millersville shortstop Lindsay Hosier and carried out of play. Mingis singled, Zanzalari reached on a fielders choice and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Mingis scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Dice, and Zanzalari came across with an insurance run on a throwing error by the catcher to give the Warriors a 5-3 advantage.
Junior pitcher Jackie Battaglino surrendered just a two-out single and got a groundball to Racek for the final out of the game to seal the victory. Battaglino went the distance in the circle for ESU and improved to 7-4 on the year. She gave up 10 hits but didn't walk a batter while striking out three.
The Warriors had 24 hits in the doubleheader, led by Dice's 5-for-6 performance. Mingis collected a pair of hits in both games and five other players - Racek, freshman 2B Brandi Stettler, Gieringer, Darcey and Zanalari - had two hits in the opener. Dice went 3-for-3 in the second game.
ESU is back on the field on Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Lincoln University.
