HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The East Stroudsburg University men's tennis team swept two matches from schools from Michigan, beating Adrian 9-0 and Grand Rapids Community College 5-4, and the women took a 5-1 decision over Adrian as the Warriors continued play over spring break on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Wins by sophomore Will Norris, senior Rob Mikolon and freshman Mark Covert at the top three spots in the lineup highlighted the men's win over Adrian on Tuesday. Sophomores Ryan Baxter and Zach Ontell and freshman Dalton Barton also won in singles for the Warriors.
Norris and Baxter (No. 1), Mikolon and Ontell (No. 2) and Covert and freshman Andrew Makos (No. 3) swept the doubles matches.
ESU won the first five singles matches against Adrian, while the doubles were not contested due to inclement weather. Sophomore Katie D'Ambrosia pulled out a 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) win at No. 1, and the Warriors dropped just five games over the next three singles contests.
Freshman Amanda Kaufman, sophomore Jamie Ferrigno and senior Sarah Deisher all posted easy victories, and junior Marissa Tanner won her first set 7-6 and led 3-0 in the second before her opponent retired due to injury at No. 5. Freshman Angela Teri fell 6-4, 6-2 at the final singles spot.
The Warriors' men won three singles matches and two of the three doubles pairings to squeeze out their win over Grand Rapids CC on Wednesday, while the women fell 5-4 to PSAC West opponent Clarion.
Norris (No. 1, 6-0, 6-2), Baxter (No. 4, 6-3, 7-5) and Makos (No. 6, 6-3, 6-1) all won their singles matches for ESU. Grand Rapids claimed all three of their singles victories in 10-point tiebreakers after they split the first two sets.
In doubles, Norris and Baxter improved to 3-0 this spring with an 8-1 win, and Covert and Makos teamed up for an 8-2 decision at third doubles. Mikolon and Ontell fell 8-5 at second doubles.
Against Clarion, the Golden Eagles won both singles matches that went to a 10-point tiebreaker and captured wins at first and third doubles for their 5-4 victory. Kassie Leuschel led the way with a 6-2, 1-6 (10-4) win over D'Ambrosia at second singles and teamed with Jaclyn Metzger for an 8-5 win at first doubles.
Kaufman won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Ferrigno won by identical scores at No. 3 and Deisher took a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4. Kaufman and Deisher posted an 8-4 win at second doubles.
