ESU Softball Wins Second Game of Doubleheader at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. - Freshman 3B Rachel Gieringer and senior C Amanda Feist hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and led East Stroudsburg University to a 10-2 win over Mars Hill in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday.

The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a come-from-behind 4-2 win in the opener. ESU is 3-3 on its spring break trip to North Carolina and will play Pfeiffer to wrap up the trip on Saturday.

In the opener, ESU took a 2-0 lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings before Mars Hill (8-8) came back. Senior 1B Kerri Jakobsen had an RBI single with the bases loaded in the fourth and sophomore SS Brittany Racek singled and scored on a throwing error in the fifth.

Mars Hill scored once in the fifth and Ashley Seawell hit a two-run homer to put the Lions ahead in the sixth inning, and they added another run later in the frame.

The Warriors came out on fire in the nightcap, as Racek singled to lead off the game and Gieringer hit her first career home run two batters later to put her team ahead 2-0. Feist followed with her eighth career home run to move into fifth in school history.

ESU added two more runs in the second when junior OF Amanda Dice led off with a double and scored on a double by Racek. Sophomore OF Jamie Mingis singled to bring in Racek and gave the Warriors a 5-0 lead.

Mars Hill got two runs back in the second, on a home run by Anna James and an RBI single by Ashley Angell, before the Warriors plated four runs in the third to take control.

Jakobsen keyed the four-run inning with a two-run single, freshman Brandi Stettler laid down a sacrifice bunt to score a run, and Racek singled to bring in pinch runner Julia Collins to complete the inning.

Junior OF Kara Darcey homered to in the fifth inning to put ESU ahead 10-2, and junior Jackie Battaglino retired the side in the bottom of the inning to close the game.

Battaglino entered the game with two outs in the second inning and shut down the Lions the rest of the way, giving up one hit while getting the final 10 outs to earn the win. Senior Jennifer Bensinger (5.2 innings, 3 earned runs) took the loss in game one.

The Warriors collected 12 hits in the second game, led by Racek (3-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Dice (3-3, 2 runs). Darcey also had a two-hit game for ESU, and Jakobsen had two hits in the opener.
