EAST STROUDSBURG - Bloomsburg pulled away from a 5-3 halftime lead with three straight goals in the second period and held off East Stroudsburg University for a 13-9 win in PSAC East women's lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
Sophomore Michelle Mangiaruga scored three goals and six other players had one goal each for the Warriors (3-7, 2-3). Sophomore Christine Bradley and Morgan Knowles both recorded a goal and two assists.
Kelsey Quigley scored two goals in each half for Bloomsburg (7-2, 4-1) and Allie Kakareka came off the bench to score three goals.
Both goalkeepers had outstanding games, especially in the first half, when ESU's Kirstin Mayberry made nine of her 15 saves and Allison Ziants had 10 of her 18 saves for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg led 2-1 at the 22:57 mark in the first half, and neither team scored again until Bradley converted on an assist from Knowles with 7:32 remaining to tie the game at 2-2. The Huskies scored three of the final four goals of the half and took a two-goal lead into the break.
Mangiaruga cut into the deficit with a free position goal just over five minutes into the second half, but Kakareka responded with a goal for Bloomsburg and had two of the Huskies' three goals in a 10-minute stretch as they took an 8-4 lead.
ESU pulled within three goals on three occasions, the final time after Mangiaruga and sophomore Christina Mongiori scored back-to-back goals to make the score 12-9 with three minutes to go, but Bloomsburg maintained the advantage and Quigley scored her final goal of the game with 27 seconds left.
Knowles had six of ESU's 14 draw controls and picked up seven ground balls to complete a strong all-around game. Both teams had 40 ground balls and Bloomsburg held a slight 40-36 edge in total shots.
The Warriors open the second half of their PSAC East schedule at Kutztown on Saturday at 1 p.m.
