PHILADELPHIA - Junior Janelle Smith and sophomore Lynn Mayer finished first and second in the women's college eastern high jump and both reached the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard on Thursday afternoon at the 115th edition of the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field.

Smith and Mayer both cleared 5-7, with Smith winning on the number of jumps, and joined freshman Devyn Emerich as ESU women's high jumpers to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships next month. Emerich won the ESU All-American Meet last weekend at 5-6 1/2 and tied for 12th with a height of 5-3 1/2 on Thursday.

Mayer, a two-time All-American as a freshman, won the high jump at the Penn Relays a year ago. Smith also qualified for both the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships last year.

On the track, the women's 4x400m relay team finished second in its heat and turned in the second-fastest time in ESU's 20 years attending the Penn Relays.

Sophomore Jasmine Johnson (58.3), senior Amilee Schillinger (60.5), junior Emily Hollick (59.3) and senior Katherine Doyle (57.6) helped the Warriors clock a time of 3:55.85, just behind Towson's 3:55.10. ESU's time was a season best by more than six seconds.

Juniors Matthew Gallup (pole vault) and Paul Wagner (shot put) will both compete individually on Friday, while the men's and women's 4x200m relay teams and the men's 4x400 squad will also be in action.
