EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior forward
Caitlin Brownley scored two goals as No. 7 East Stroudsburg University opened up a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Stonehill College in the field hockey season opener for both schools on Saturday at Whitenight Field.
Brownley, the Warriors' top scorer with eight goals and six assists last season, opened the scoring 5:10 into the game and added the third goal of the first half at 26:36. Junior Joanna Reckley also found the cage of ESU about six minutes after Brownley's first goal.
The Warriors were poised to take a 3-0 lead into halftime until Courtney Foley scored off a penalty corner as time expired. Stonehill scored its second goal 6:11 into the second half when Jackie Ladino converted a pass from Michaela Deasy, but ESU held off the Skyhawks the rest of the way.
Sophomore Maureen Ordnung made 14 saves, including nine in the second half, in her second career start for ESU. Stonehill held a 27-8 advantage in shots and 13-5 margin in penalty corners for the contest, and goalkeeper Courtney Osier had five saves.
ESU returns to Whitenight Field on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start against Merrimack College.
