EAST STROUDSBURG - Freshman
Marissa Spitler scored 3:17 into the game and added another goal in the second half as East Stroudsburg University won its PSAC East women's soccer opener over Millersville, 5-2, on Wednesday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The Warriors (3-1, 1-0) opened a 5-0 lead, scoring three goals in the first half and two more in the first 25 minutes of the second half, before Millersville (1-2, 0-1) got on the board with two late goals.
Spitler opened the scoring early in the contest, junior forward Kailyn Buckley scored off the rebound of a shot taken by sophomore midfielder Devon Miniscalco and freshman forward Ashley McKenna scored on an assist from junior forward Lindsay Foder to give the Warriors their halftime advantage.
Spitler netted her second goal 9:58 into the second half and Miniscalco put in a rebound after sophomore forward Rebecca Porcaro hit the post as ESU extended its lead to 5-0.
Brianna Pham scored on a 45-yard direct kick with just over 20 minutes left and Chrissy McLaughlin had Millersville's second goal with less than two minutes on the clock. Taylor Suskie made eight saves for the Marauders and sophomore Melissa Myers had three saves for ESU.
Spitler took over the team lead with four goals through the first four games and Foder has three goals and three assists this season. Three other Warriors have scored two goals each - Buckley, Miniscalco and Porcaro - and ESU has outscored its opponents 14-5 so far in 2009.
ESU continues PSAC East action on Saturday at Mansfield and hosts Charleston (W.V.) on Sunday at noon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
