EDINBORO – Senior forward
DeAnna Rayam had her second double-double of the season with 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, but Edinboro improved to 9-4 on the season with a 75-53 win over East Stroudsburg University in non-conference women's basketball on Sunday afternoon.
Rayam had seven offensive and nine defensive rebounds as ESU (2-11) outrebounded the Fighting Scots, 45-43, and shot 12-for-13 from the foul line to break into the Warriors' career top 10 for made free throws. She had her second 20-point game of the season and leads ESU in scoring at 15.4 points per game.
Sophomore forward
Jennifer Scherer tied her career-high with 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting and added eight rebounds. Senior center
Alexa Detzi pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds and blocked three shots, part of a season-best eight blocked shots for the Warriors, and freshman guard
Barb Borst added nine points.
Samantha Reimer led Edinboro with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists, Miki Cerchiaro came off the bench for 17 points and eight rebounds and Renee' Brown gathered 16 points and eight boards, going 5-for-6 from the field and 4-for-5 from long distance.
Edinboro was 9-for-20 from the three-point line for the game and got off to a quick start, hitting four of their first five attempts in the first 4:30 to run out to a 14-0 lead. The Warriors managed to cut a 24-point deficit to 16 at halftime with a 12-4 run to close the half, led by six points from Rayam.
A three-pointer by Scherer made the score 43-30 two minutes into the second half, but the Warriors wouldn't get any closer. A 13-1 spurt late in the game closed the gap to 18 after Edinboro extended the margin to 30 with 6:40 left, its largest of the contest.
ESU is back in action on Wednesday with a trip to Kutztown for its first PSAC East game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
