ESU Upsets Shippensburg, Advances to PSAC Championship Game with 2-1 Win

BLOOMSBURG - Senior forward Jessica Frantz scored in the first half and senior midfielder Joanna Reckley added an insurance goal in the second half as No. 4 East Stroudsburg University upset No. 1 Shippensburg, 2-1, in the PSAC field hockey semifinals on Friday afternoon at Bloomsburg's Sports Stadium.

ESU advances to the PSAC championship game for the second time in school history. The Warriors lost to Lock Haven, 3-0, in the championship game in 2001. This also marks ESU's first appearance in the PSAC tournament since 2002.

Shippensburg's Bre White made the score 2-1 on a penalty stroke with 2:58 left, and the Warriors (17-4) fought off two untimed penalty corners at the end of regulation to secure the victory and tie the school record with their 17th win of the season.

Shippensburg (20-1) suffers its first loss of the year after an undefeated regular season, including two wins (3-2 OT, 3-0) over ESU. The Lady Raiders advantages of 15-4 in shots and 16-2 on penalty corners on the afternoon, but ESU scored on its first and last shots of the game.

Junior Maureen Ordnung made eight saves in goal for the Warriors and senior back Angela Frantz had a defensive save, coming about a minute before Shippensburg's penalty stroke goal

Jessica Frantz scored 9:31 into the first half, her 31st goal of the year, for a 1-0 lead that stood up until halftime. Shippensburg held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half.

Reckley's goal came with 17:43 remaining in the second half and was assisted by midfielder Amanda McGuire on a penalty corner. The goal was Reckley's seventh of the season and the 15th of her career at ESU.

The Warriors will take on Bloomsburg in the PSAC championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. after the Huskies beat Mansfield, 4-3, in the other semifinal. ESU and Bloomsburg split their two regular season meetings, with the Warriors winning 3-2 at Bloomsburg on Oct. 2 and falling 1-0 at home on Oct. 30. Bloomsburg has won the last two PSAC championships and 16 of the 31 in PSAC history.
