EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman guard Barb Borst scored a career-high 17 points, including 15 in the second half, but Cheyney held off East Stroudsburg University for a 73-61 win in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday afternoon.

Lutfiyya Muhammad scored 19 points and Angel Stephens had 18 points and 14 rebounds to go over 1,000 points for her career for Cheyney (9-15, 6-6), which led by 14 with just over nine minutes to go before the Warriors nearly came back.

Borst did nearly all of her damage in a 12-minute stretch midway through the second half and brought ESU within 60-55 with a three-pointer and a layup on consecutive possessions with four minutes left. Stephens steadied the Wolves with a basket the next time down and they went on to stretch the lead to double figures with two minutes to play.

Senior forward DeAnna Rayam added 12 points and averaged 20.7 points in three games this week, with a career-high 32 vs. Kutztown on Monday and 18 in a 68-63 win at Mansfield on Wednesday.

Borst also had her best three-game stretch of the season with 14.0 ppg, including an 8-for-13 performance from the three-point line. She didn't miss a shot while scoring 15 points at Mansfield and had 10 points in Monday's game.

The Warriors used a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead five minutes into the contest as Rayam hit a three for their first points and senior guard Mel Villano drained a pair of jumpers sandwiched around an offensive rebound and putback by sophomore forward Becky Hayter.

ESU led 16-10 before Cheyney got into an offensive rhythm, scoring 16 straight points to open up the largest lead of the first half for either team at 26-16. The stretch included a personal 6-0 run for Stephens and her 1,000th career point.

The Warriors put together five straight points to get within 28-23 on a layup by freshman forward Mia Waring, who tied her career-high with nine points, and a three-pointer by sophomore forward Jennifer Scherer, who had seven points and matched her career-high of 10 rebounds. Lutfiyya Muhammad hit two three-pointers in the final 2:14 of the first half to give Cheyney a 34-26 halftime lead.

The Wolves led by double figures for most of the first dozen minutes of the second half before ESU came back. A layup by Rayam cut the deficit to 55-43 with 8:30 left and Borst had a layup and hit a three to complete an 8-0 run that made the score 55-48 with 6:57 on the clock.

Muhammad hit her third triple of the game for the Wolves to go back up by 10 and Villano and Stephanie Orji traded baskets before Borst's second five-point spurt that made it a five-point game before Cheyney pulled away.

Villano finished with eight points, five rebounds and tied her career-high with six assists, which included the 200th of her career. Rayam was in double figures for the 23rd time in 25 games and senior center Alexa Detzi had five points, five rebounds and four blocked shots to tie her career-best. Detzi moved into ESU's single-season top 10 with 27 blocks this year.

The three seniors will be recognized on Senior Night when ESU hosts Millersville in its final home game of the year on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors finish the season on the road at West Chester next Saturday.

ESU recognized its 36 1,000-point scorers (23 men, 13 women) in school history between games.
