EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University nearly pulled off the upset of the 2009-10 season on Senior Night, overcoming a 17-point halftime deficit to take a two-point lead with less than seven minutes left, but the game-tying three-pointer was blocked at the buzzer as No. 23 Millersville held off the Warriors for a 52-49 win.

The Warriors played the Marauders (22-4, 12-1) tough in both games this season, pulling within five points with a minute to go in a 55-46 loss on February 3, but found themselves trailing 29-12 at halftime before they came out firing in the second half. ESU's 11-0 run included two three-pointers by freshman guard Barb Borst (12 points) to cut the margin to 29-23 with 14 minutes left.

ESU trailed 37-26 before going on another huge run, rattling off 16 of the next 19 points in a span of 4:40 to take a 42-40 lead. The Warriors scored on seven of their 10 possessions, got six points from senior forward DeAnna Rayam and six on two three-pointers by redshirt sophomore forward Brittany McClain (12 points), and took their first lead of the night on the second three with 6:52 on the clock.

The Warriors had three blocks on Millersville's next offensive trip, two by senior center Alexa Detzi and one by sophomore forward Jennifer Scherer, before Gabrielle Styles tied the game with two free throws. Scherer scored on a backdoor cut on a pass from Detzi to give ESU a 44-42 edge with 5:38 left, while Mashira Newman (14 points, 10 rebounds, four steals) came back to tie the game with a layup.

Millersville twice went back up by three, but McClain hit her fourth three-pointer of the game with 52 seconds left to tie the score for the final time at 49-all. Ashley Moyer scored to put the Marauders up two with 36 seconds left and made one-of-two at the line after an ESU turnover. The Warriors called timeout with 10 seconds left but McClain's three was blocked by Jenna Craig to allow Millersville to escape.

ESU recognized its three seniors, Detzi, Rayam and Mel Villano, before their final home game at Koehler Fieldhouse. Detzi had two points, six rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots; Rayam scored 10 points and had five rebounds; and Villano finished her home career with two points and three rebounds.

ESU will finish its 2009-10 season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start at West Chester.
