ESU Lacrosse Improves to 2-0 with 11-9 Win at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – Juniors Michelle Mangiaruga and Molly O'Hara both scored three goals and East Stroudsburg University held Belmont Abbey scoreless over the final 11 minutes to improve to 2-0 with for an 11-9 win in women's lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams put together big runs before the Warriors scored the final three goals to put the game away. Senior Lindsey Moyer scored the game-tying goal with just over 10 minutes to play on an assist from junior Christine Bradley, sophomore Kelsey Pfautz netted the go-ahead goal on a free position shot with 6:12 left and Mangiaruga scored unassisted 17 seconds later for the final goal of the game.

ESU went ahead 4-1 early in the game before Belmont Abbey rallied for a 6-4 advantage at halftime. Freshman Ali Green, Mangiaruga, O'Hara and junior Jamie Wesztergom scored for the Warriors in the first 10 minutes of the first half, and Moyer, Mangiaruga and O'Hara scored the first three goals of the second half to give ESU a 7-6 lead.

Belmont Abbey scored three of the next four goals and took a 9-8 edge with 11:12 remaining before Moyer tied it a minute later and Pfautz scored her fourth career goal to put the Warriors ahead for good.

Mangiaruga had her 15th career hat trick in 26 games and O'Hara netted her 16th game with at least three goals and second of the season after scoring four times in a 14-13 (OT) victory at Queens in Charlotte in the season opener on Monday.

Sophomore Amanda Simms made eight saves in goal for her second win of the year and junior Brittany Bissell had team-highs with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The Warriors will be away from action until next Wednesday when they host Bloomsburg in their PSAC East opener at 4 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
