ESU Softball Drops Pair of One-Run Games at Glenville State Tournament

GLENVILLE, W.V. – West Virginia State and Glenville State won one-run games against East Stroudsburg University on Friday, while Saturday's action was rained out in a tournament at Glenville State this weekend.

WV State posted a 3-2 win in the opener and Glenville State won 2-1 in eight innings in the second game. ESU is scheduled to play its home opener, weather permitting, on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Zimbar Field.

Junior designated player Brittany Racek doubled and scored on a groundout by sophomore 3B Rachel Gieringer for ESU's first run of the game vs. WV State to make the score 3-1 in the fifth inning. The Warriors added another run in the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single by senior Jackie Battaglino that scored senior C Kara Darcey.

Junior Caitlin Monahan allowed just one earned run in her seventh complete game of the season, with seven strikeouts, one walk and six hits over 7.0 innings. Sara Pelegreen was the winning pitcher after throwing the first 4.2 innings, with Kelsey Lorraine finishing the game to earn the save.

Glenville State scored first in the second game, plating an unearned run in the third inning, before junior C Samantha Capriotti doubled with one out in the bottom of the third and scored on a two-out triple by junior CF Alicea Ashe.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the eighth inning and Glenville State capitalized on its runner on second using the international tiebreaker when Sara McFarland singled to score pinch runner Brooke Foster. ESU pinch runner Tegan Wendell was thrown out at home by the third baseman for the second out of the inning to end the Warriors' scoring threat in the bottom of the eighth.

Battaglino didn't allow an earned run and went all eight innings but took the loss in the circle for ESU. Mandy Parkulo limited the Warriors to three hits over eight innings for Glenville State.

Racek was 2-for-3 with two doubles vs. WV State before going 0-for-3 in the second game to end a nine-game hitting streak. She hit .500 (9-for-18) with two doubles, a triple and two home runs in six games last week and is hitting .417 on the season with three home runs, a .491 on-base percentage and .750 slugging percentage.
