LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Drew Miller just missed the NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the triple jump to lead East Stroudsburg University at the Lynchburg Invitational to open the outdoor track and field season on Saturday.

The Warriors won 12 events, nine by the men and three by the women, with Miller (triple jump, long jump) and freshman Frank Fezza (800, 1500) winning multiple events. Seven individuals won events overall, along with three relays.

Miller, a three-time NCAA participant in the triple jump, had a provisional qualifying mark of 50-0 1/2, two inches off the automatic standard for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships at the end of the season at UNC-Charlotte. Miller won his fourth career PSAC title at 50-1 3/4 during the indoor season and also won the long jump at 23-1 1/2 on Saturday.

Junior Lynn Mayer earned her third career All-America honor in the high jump last week after tying for second at the NCAA indoor championships in Albuquerque. She cleared 5-5 to win the women's high jump at Lynchburg.

The men's 4x100 relay went to the NCAA outdoor championships last year for the first time in school history and was .08 off the provisional qualifying time in the first meet this season. Junior Asher Ashfield, sophomore Ian Melhorn and seniors Chris Reddick and Andrew McCloskey ran a time of 41.43 seconds on Saturday, with Ashfield, Reddick and McCloskey returning from the squad that ran 40.83 to set the school record last year.

McCloskey, who won the 100 and 200 to go with the 4x100 relay at last year's PSAC Championships, returned after missing most of the indoor season due to injury and was second in the 100 in 10.71 seconds. McCloskey holds the school record in both the 100 (10.41) and 200 (21.30) in his career at ESU.

Fezza dominated the mid-distance events, winning the 800 in 1:56.70 and 1500 in 3:57.76. Junior Chris Zadroga won the 3000m steeplechase (9:39.55), junior Greg Pammer took the 400m (49.77) and freshman Corey Young won the 110m hurdles (15.05).

The 4x400 relay team (Reddick, Melhorn, Pammer and junior Negus Graham) posted a winning time of 3:18.60. Graham earned All-America honors in the 400m at the NCAA indoor championships last week, finishing fourth in 47.37 seconds. He was 12th in the 800m in 2:02.07 in his only individual event on Saturday.

Melhorn had a strong time of 22.32 seconds to finish fourth in the 200m and freshman Kyle Soden was second in the high jump at 6-6 3/4 to round out the top finishers for the Warriors' men.

Mayer highlighted the performances on the women's side, with junior Danielle Laws (hammer) and the 4x100m relay team also winning their events.

Freshman Lauren Ventrella anchored the 4x100 relay to a time of 49.25, along with sophomore Alyssa Rupp, freshman Lauren Hannan and junior Jasmine Johnson. Ventrella was second in the 100m hurdles in 14.93, just off the school record of 14.77, and set the indoor school record and was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 60m hurdles in the winter. She was also seventh in the 200 (26.26).

Johnson, ESU's first women's sprinter to compete at the NCAA outdoor championships when she ran in the 400m last spring, finished second in the 400 (57.52).

Freshmen Rose Mascoli and Corinne Fitzgerald also stood out in the 3000m, with Mascoli placing second in 19:14.65 and Fitzgerald third in 19:20.80.

Laws led a strong effort by the women's throwers, finishing in the top five in the hammer, shot put and discus. She won the hammer with a mark of 135-1, was third in the discus at 117-6 and fifth in the shot (37-7 1/4). Senior Emily Carothers was third in both the hammer (133-1) and shot put (37-7 1/2).

The Warriors' multi-event athletes started the weekend on Thursday and Friday at the Charlotte 49ers Classic in North Carolina. Sophomore Dan Johnson was fifth (5,951 points) and senior Colin Feeney was seventh (5,529) in the decathlon, and sophomore Anna Bixler was 11th in the women's heptathlon.
