Jackie Battaglino threw a complete game and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 6-2 win over Coker in the Warriors' second game of the Mid-South Classic on Saturday.
ESU fell to Carson-Newman, 2-1 in eight innings, in its opener on Friday and dropped a 4-3 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne later in the day on Saturday. The Warriors will finish their stay in Spartanburg with games against Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry on Sunday.
Battaglino struck out six and allowed seven hits in her start against Coker, and broke a 2-2 tie with her solo homer in the top of the fourth. Junior
Brittany Racek went 3-for-4 and sophomore
Rachel Gieringer and junior
Jamie Fisher were both 2-for-3 for the Warriors, with Fisher collecting a double and scoring two runs.
In the opener against Carson-Newman, junior
Caitlin Monahan tossed a complete game but Carson-Newman was able to capitalize on its runner on second using the international tiebreaker format to win in eight innings. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first before ESU tied it in the fourth as Gieringer singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Kara Darcey and scored on a base hit by sophomore
Brittany Zanzalari.
Monahan also went the distance against Lenoir-Rhyne for her fourth complete game of the season. The Warriors put together three hits and a walk to score two runs in the second, with sophomore
Pam Sellers contributing an RBI double and Racek finishing the inning with a single to plate a run.
Lenoir-Rhyne tied the game at 2-2 with runs in the third and fourth before ESU went back ahead in the fifth. Racek doubled, moved to third on an error and scored on a squeeze bunt by Darcey to put the Warriors in front, 3-2. The Bears tied the game and took the lead in the seventh on home runs by Kat Rivers, who also homered in the third, and Sarah Atkins.
The Warriors will wrap up the Mid-South Classic with games at 12 and 2 p.m. on Sunday and head to North Carolina for doubleheaders against Mars Hill and Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
