SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The East Stroudsburg University softball team came out on the wrong end of a pair of close games on Sunday to close its trip to the Mid-South Classic, falling 1-0 to Newberry (S.C.) and 10-8 to Catawba (N.C.).
Senior pitcher
Jackie Battaglino threw well in both games, tossing a complete game four-hitter against Newberry and throwing 1.2 scoreless innings to keep Catawba off the board late in ESU's second game of the day.
Newberry finished the Mid-South Classic with a 7-0 record and used a two-hit shutout by Amanda Huckstein and a solo homer in the sixth inning by Felicia Taylor to edge the Warriors, 1-0.
In the second game, junior
Brittany Racek tagged her first home run of the year, went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored three runs. Sophomore
Rachel Gieringer went 1-for-3 with a double, walked and scored. Racek also had one of the Warriors' two base hits vs. Newberry.
ESU (2-8) returns to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Mars Hill (N.C.).
