Bison Outdoor Classic Results

LEWISBURG – Seniors Matthew Gallup, Drew Miller and Paul Wagner all had standout performances to lead East Stroudsburg University at the talent-laden Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday at Bucknell University.

Gallup became ESU's fifth NCAA provisional qualifier during the outdoor season with a height of 16-2 3/4 to tie for first in the men's invitational pole vault. He also qualified provisionally indoors this year and was selected to compete in the NCAA outdoor championships during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Miller and Wagner, already provisional qualifiers, both won Bison Outdoor Classic titles. Miller won the triple jump at 49-9, just off his mark of 50-0 1/2 at Lynchburg which was sixth in Division II entering the weekend. He also place second in the long jump at 23-0 3/4.

Wagner captured the hammer throw with a mark of 191-3 and also had a season-best in the shot put (49-3 1/2). Wagner is ranked eighth in the nation in the hammer with a throw of 193-7 last week at Millersville.

Junior Lynn Mayer, the only provisional qualifier to date on the women's side, tied for first in the high jump at 5-5. Mayer's mark of 5-8 two weeks ago at Lafayette still stands as the third-best in the nation this season.

The Warriors also had a number of season-best performances, led by their men's sprinters.

In the 100m dash, junior Asher Ashfield won his heat and was tied for fourth overall with a time of 10.74 seconds, senior Andrew McCloskey was third in the fastest heat and sixth overall at 10.75, and sophomore Ian Melhorn ran a season-best time of 10.90.

McCloskey, the defending PSAC champion in the 100 and 200, won his heat and was third in the meet in the 200 in 21.80.

In the 400m, junior Negus Graham was third in the fastest heat and fourth overall in 48.17 and is looking for the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 48.0 after placing fourth at the NCAA Division II indoor championships with a school record of 47.37.

Graham also anchored the 4x400m relay to a season best of 3:16.39, along with Melhorn, senior Chris Reddick and junior Greg Pammer.

Junior Jasmine Johnson ran in the fastest heat of the women's 400m and clocked a time of 57.08 seconds, less than three-tenths of a second off the provisional time of 56.8. She holds the school record of 56.06 and ran at the NCAA outdoor championships last season.

Freshman Lauren Ventrella turned in two strong efforts in the 200m and 100m hurdles. She won her heat in both events and was fifth overall in the hurdles, tying her season-best with a time of 14.93. She also posted her top time of the year in the 200 at 26.20.
