EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University senior Jackie Battaglino and Mercyhurst's Kristi Janoske both threw 1-0 shutouts as the two schools split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Saturday on Senior Day at Zimbar Field.

Battaglino threw complete games in both ends of the doubleheader, recording seven strikeouts and two walks, and held the Lakers to 10 hits on the day, including a four-hit shutout in the second game.

Janoske tossed a two-hitter in the opener and relieved Amanda Norman in the fifth inning of the nightcap, yielding just two hits in 8.2 innings over her two appearances.

Battaglino threw her second shutout of the year and the fourth of her career while moving into ESU's career top 10 with 48 career starts, tying Sue Fink (1985-88) and Claire Hoherchak (1987-90). She also ranks seventh in strikeouts (177), eight in games (78) and 10th in innings (342.1) in her career with 10 games left on the schedule in the regular season.

Mercyhurst (18-18) scored the lone run of the first game in the top of the fourth when the Lakers had two singles and pinch runner Molly McNamara scored from third during a rundown between first and second that led to the third out of the inning.

ESU (17-22) had both of its hits in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back one out singles by sophomore C Samantha Capriotti and sophomore 2B Brandi Stettler. Sophomore SS Pam Sellers laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position, but Janoske got junior CF Alicea Ashe to fly out to right field and retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the shutout.

Ashe was 2-for-2 in the leadoff spot and scored the Warriors' only run in the second game as they got on the board in the third inning. Ashe stroked a leadoff double and scored from second after a throwing error by Janoske on a bunt single by sophomore 3B Rachel Gieringer.

Battaglino worked through the Lakers lineup three times and didn't allow more than one base runner in any inning. She lowered her season ERA to 3.61 with one earned run over 14 innings and has thrown 139.2 innings in 29 appearances this season, including 21 starts. She is seven appearances away from the school record of 36 set by Tina Morak in 2000.

Outfielders Kara Darcey and Amanda Dice were also recognized on Senior Day. Darcey, a four-year starter, is in ESU's career top 10 in home runs, RBI, total bases and walks and has 127 career hits, one away from the 10th spot. Dice has been a strong contributor in each of her four years and hit .296 through the first 11 games before suffering an injury.

The Warriors, third in the PSAC East with a 5-5 record, will play three doubleheaders next week as they look to secure one of the division's three playoff spots. They travel to West Chester (26-9, 9-3) on Tuesday, host Kutztown (31-12, 9-3) on Friday and head to Shippensburg (13-23, 2-8) on Saturday.
