Tiebreaker Leaves ESU Women’s Tennis Out of PSAC Postseason

4/15/2010 12:00:00 AM

LOCK HAVEN – Kutztown and West Chester have been selected to join No. 1 seed Bloomsburg as the PSAC East representatives in the conference's women's tennis postseason tournament, it has been announced.

ESU, Kutztown and West Chester all finished their PSAC East schedules with identical 3-2 records, which included a 1-1 record against each other. ESU beat West Chester 5-4 on Tuesday to force the tie, while West Chester beat Kutztown 5-4 and Kutztown defeated ESU 9-0.

The first three tiebreakers in the PSAC handbook were inconclusive – head-to-head competition, results against other PSAC East schools and results against common opponents – so the fourth criteria was used to select the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to join top seed Bloomsburg (5-0).

The PSAC commissioner and head coaches from Millersville and Cheyney agreed to award the final two spots based on the number of matches won in head-to-head competition among the three teams involved in the tie – Kutztown (13), West Chester (9) and ESU (6).

As a result, Kutztown will be the No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 West Chester in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the PSAC semifinals at Bloomsburg on April 23-24. In the PSAC West, California is the top seed, followed by No. 2 Slippery Rock and No. 3 Mercyhurst.

ESU made its first appearance in the PSAC tournament last year since the conference went to a dual-match tournament format in 2004.
