BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – Junior
Michelle Mangiaruga scored a career-high six goals and nearly led East Stroudsburg University to an upset of No. 9-ranked Dowling, as the Warriors fell 13-10 in a non-conference lacrosse match-up on Saturday afternoon on Long Island.
Mangiaruga added an assist for a career-high seven points and had her 19th career hat trick. She scored four goals in the first half as ESU (9-5) trailed 6-5 at the break, and tied the game at 8-8 with just under 20 minutes left in regulation.
Her sixth goal made the score 12-10 with 6:18 to play but Dowling goalkeeper Rachael Goldstein made three saves in the closing minutes and the Golden Lions (8-4) held on. Goldstein had 15 saves, including 11 in the second half.
Cassandra Cronin scored four goals for Dowling, including the final goal of the game with 3:52 left. Dowling held a 34-28 advantage in shots but the Warriors turned the ball over just 15 times to offset a 17-8 deficit in draw controls.
Mangiaruga put the Warriors on the board first with a free position shot and found the net three more times in the first 30 minutes. Dowling led 5-2 with 16:25 left but scored just one more goal before intermission, while Mangiaruga scored twice and sophomore
Laura Riegel closed the margin to 6-5 with a free position goal with just over two minutes remaining.
Junior
Molly O'Hara, the Warriors' leading scorer with 41 goals this season, tied the game at 6-6 with her only goal of the game on an assist from Mangiaruga 5:10 into the second half.
Both teams put together two-goal spurts that left the score tied at 8-all at the 19:21 mark before Dowling took the lead for good on a tally by Stephanie Cotter 15 seconds later, the start of a four-goal run for the Golden Lions.
Junior
Christine Bradley netted her lone goal with 11:43 left to make it 12-9 and Mangiaurga narrowed the deficit to two goals with her final goal of the game five minutes later.
ESU will seek its 10th win of the season on Monday at home against Georgian Court, which would mark the third 10-win campaign in school history and move the Warriors within one game of the school record of 11 wins held by the 2000 and 2008 teams.
