LOCK HAVEN – Senior catcher
Kara Darcey hit her 10th career home run as East Stroudsburg University beat Lock Haven, 4-1, in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Lawrence Field.
The Bald Eagles (20-19) won the opener 7-0 behind a one-hitter from Becca Bailey, who was backed up by an offense that scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a 2-0 game. Sophomore SS
Pam Sellers had the Warriors' only hit, a two-out single in the fifth.
Darcey was 2-for-3 in the second game, including her fourth homer of the season, a two-out, two-run shot in the top of the fourth that gave ESU a 2-1 lead. She is the eighth player in school history to hit 10 career home runs, including junior teammates
Alicea Ashe (11) and
Brittany Racek (10) who reached the plateau earlier this year.
ESU (19-28) added two more runs in the seventh to support junior
Caitlin Monahan, who gave up five hits, struck out four and didn't issue a walk. Lock Haven plated its only run in the first on a solo homer by Becca Bailey.
Sophomore
Rachel Gieringer led off the top of the seventh with a pinch-hit single which was followed by a bunt single by Darcey. After a fielders' choice, Sellers drove in Darcey with a base hit and senior OF
Amanda Dice scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashe, who collected her 30th RBI of the season.
Senior
Jackie Battaglino started in the circle for the Warriors in the first game and threw her 20th complete game of the season, holding LHU to two runs, both unearned, until the fifth inning. She pitched in her 33rd game of the year, moving into a tie for second and three behind the school record of 36 set by Tina Morak in 2000.
The Warriors will make their fourth straight appearance in the PSAC playoffs this weekend, traveling to California (Pa.) for first round action. Nine schools will compete at three sites in a double-elimination tournament with the winner of each site advancing to the championship round.
ESU faces IUP, the No. 2 seed in the PSAC Central, in its opening game on Friday at 11 a.m. California (PSAC West No. 1) will play the loser of the first game at 1 p.m. and the winner at 3 p.m. Saturday's schedule will be determined by Friday's results.
