PHILADELPHIA – Junior centerfielder
Alicea Ashe hit a grand slam to tie the school record with her ninth home run of the season as East Stroudsburg University and Philadelphia University split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday. The Warriors won the opener 16-4 before the Rams took the second game 10-0, both in five innings.
Ashe tied All-Region shortstop Jen Veronesi's record with a blast to complete a seven-run third inning for the Warriors in the opener and also had a leadoff double to start a four-run first.
Veronesi set the mark in 2006 and also holds ESU's career record of 18 home runs from 2004-07; Ashe had two homers entering the year and is tied for fourth in school history with Ashley Miller (2003-06) with 11.
The Warriors (16-21) had 14 hits and four players had multiple-hit games. Sophomore C
Samantha Capriotti was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs and Ashe, senior OF
Kara Darcey and sophomore SS
Pam Sellers were all 2-for-4. Darcey hit her third homer of the year and scored three runs.
ESU led 13-0 before Philadelphia U (11-13) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Warriors added three more in the fifth, including Darcey's two-run homer.
Senior
Jackie Battaglino allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out six to improve to 9-11 on the season. ESU committed three errors, while the Rams were charged with eight errors but still gave up 13 earned runs.
In the second game, Ali Schmidt fired a two-hitter and the Rams scored at least one run in every inning, including a grand slam by Katie Renner to end the game in the fifth. Philadelphia U had 14 hits and Renner was 4-for-4 out of the number three spot.
ESU hosts Mercyhurst in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Zimbar Field. The Warriors will honor their seniors before their final Saturday home game of the season.
