CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior Lynn Mayer tied the school record with her fourth career All-America honor and junior Negus Graham and the men's 4x100m relay also claimed All-American status for East Stroudsburg University on the final day of the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships on Saturday at UNC Charlotte's Irwin Belk Complex.
The Warriors crowned three individuals (Mayer, Graham and senior Paul Wagner) and the relay team as All-Americans, a school record for one NCAA championship. The All-America honor for the relay is the first in school history. Wagner was seventh in the hammer throw on Thursday.
Mayer tied for third in the high jump at 5-7 and tied for second at the indoor championships in the winter. She was also a two-time All-American as a freshman in 2008 and matched her coach, Karen (Way) Gaita, as ESU's only four-time All-Americans. Mayer cleared the first three heights on her first attempt before going out at 5-8.
Graham earned his second All-America honor of the year in the 400m dash, finishing eighth in 47.08 seconds. He was fourth at the NCAA indoor championships, won the PSAC outdoor title and holds school records both indoors (47.37) and outdoors (46.64) going into his senior year as the only non-hurdler to earn All-America status at a distance under 1500 meters.
The 4x100m relay was also eighth, with junior Asher Ashfield, sophomore Ian Melhorn and seniors Chris Reddick and Andrew McCloskey clocking a time of 41.51. The quartet ran 40.80 in the prelims and won the PSAC title in a school record 40.79. Ashfield, Reddick and McCloskey all ran on the relay that competed at the NCAA championships in 2009 for the first time in school history.
Senior Drew Miller completed his final NCAA championship by placing ninth in the triple jump after competing in the long jump on Thursday. Miller made the triple jump final with a mark of 49-1 3/4, more than a foot better than 10th place, but was unable to reach the 49-3 1/2 mark for the final All-America spot. Miller made his fourth appearance at the NCAA's and was ESU's first men's athlete to compete in two events in at least 15 years.
ESU had three other individuals compete on Saturday. Sophomore Josh Hontz, the sixth Warrior to compete in the javelin in the last 10 years, was 13th at 183-11. Senior Matthew Gallup (pole vault) and senior Janelle Smith (high jump) both no heighted in their events; Gallup was making his third NCAA championship appearance while Smith went for the fourth time.
The Warriors finish one of the most successful track and field seasons in school history with PSAC runner-up finishes from the men at both the indoor and outdoor championships and 21 school records, 14 indoors and seven outdoors.
