EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University placed 156 student-athletes on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2009-10 academic year, the conference announced Wednesday.
A record total of 2,019 student-athletes were recognized from the PSAC's 16 institutions, which includes second-year members Gannon and Mercyhurst following the conference's expansion. The conference honored 1,859 student-athletes in 2008-09.
To be eligible for the scholar-athlete awards, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. ESU had 131 recipients in 2008-09 and 123 in 2007-08; the Warriors' 156 student-athletes this year are fifth in the PSAC and third among PASSHE institutions.
The PSAC's list is topped by the Pete Nevins Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which were awarded to wrestler Jarrod King of Edinboro and track and field and cross country runner Mary Dell of Shippensburg.
The scholar-athlete of the year award was renamed in 2007 to honor Pete Nevins, who passed away earlier that year. Nevins was the sports information director at ESU from 1969 until his retirement in 2002.
ESU's scholar-athletes are headed by three ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans – Matt Freed (football), Toric Robinson (men's soccer) and Paul Wagner (men's track and field). The PSAC had a record-setting year for Academic All-Americans in 2009-10, with a conference record 21 student-athletes selected.
The Warriors had seven other student-athletes selected to the Academic All-District teams in their respective sports – Zachary Sarginger (football), Kailyn Buckley and Lindsay Foder (women's soccer), Trina Carito, Lynn Mayer and Janelle Smith (women's track and field) and Drew Miller (men's track and field). ESU has had 10 Academic All-District selections in each of the last three years, leading the conference in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
ESU also had four PSAC Top 10 recipients, recognizing the top five male and female scholar-athletes in the fall, winter and spring seasons. Freed and Foder were named to the Fall Top 10, while Wagner was selected on the Winter and Spring lists for the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
