EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University, ranked No. 4 in Division II, overcame an early one-goal deficit to post a 3-1 win over visiting No. 10 IUP in non-conference field hockey on Saturday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
Senior forward
Jessica Frantz scored two more goals to bring her total to 15 in the first five games of the 2010 season. She leads the nation by a wide margin and has scored 29 goals in 26 games since transferring to ESU from IUP prior to the 2009 season, including five goals in a 9-4 win vs. Mansfield on Wednesday.
IUP opened the scoring on a goal by Anouk Sickman 7:21 into the game before the Warriors scored twice before halftime.
Senior midfielder
Joanna Reckley scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Frantz to put the Warriors ahead 2-1 with 8:30 left in the first half after Frantz tied the score five minutes earlier. Frantz added her second goal five minutes into the second half. Sophomore midfielder
Mallory Pope and sophomore forward
Alyson Becker had assists on Frantz's two goals.
ESU improves to 5-0 for the first time since 1996 and just the second time in 27 seasons under head coach
Sandy Miller. ESU opened last season with a 9-1 record, winning seven straight after taking its first loss of the season.
The Warriors won their second straight game against IUP after losing six straight. Last year's 3-2 win over the Crimson Hawks was highlighted by Frantz's game-winning goal with 16 seconds left.
The Warriors open their PSAC East schedule on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. game vs. C.W. Post as they wrap up a four-game homestand at Whitenight Field.
